This course provides information to Medical Professionals about the Supported Decision-Making and Representation Act, which came into effect on January 1, 2024. This new law is based on human rights and recognizes that individuals should have as much control over their own decisions as possible.


Medical professionals who conduct or support capacity assessments in New Brunswick. It provides clear guidance on completing assessments under the province’s Supported Decision-Making framework, with a focus on upholding adult rights, promoting autonomy, and supporting individuals to make their own decisions whenever possible.

The Supported Decision-Making and Representation Act, is based on human rights and recognizes that individuals should have as much control over their own decisions as possible. It also ensures that individuals who need support to make decisions can get the help they need while still having their choices respected. This course covers how decision-making rights have changed in New Brunswick, the importance of supporting individuals to make their own choices, how the new law protects people’s rights and independence and how to conduct capacity assessments.


Capacity Assessments Under the SDMRA
This course helps medical professionals learn how to do capacity assessments under New Brunswick’s Supported Decision-Making framework. It covers the main principles, practical tips, and step-by-step guidance for supporting adults to make their own choices while respecting their rights.

This course provides more detailed explanations of the information and concepts, along with extra features such as explanatory videos, case samples, and examples of legal concepts and options. They also offer opportunities to further explore the capacity assessment approaches.
Capacity Assessor's Guide
The guide explains why the Act was created and how it works. It outlines the role of capacity assessments in helping adults, families, lawyers, and courts understand what supports a person may need when making decisions. This guide is offered in both official languages.
